EXTREMELY RARE 1848-D/D HALF EAGLE FROM THE SSCA; ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN IN UNCIRCULATED

Salvaged from the SSCA #2.

This is arguably the single most important Dahlonega coin found in either of the SSCA salvages. The 1848-D/D is the rarest collectible Dahlonega issue of any denomination and there are only two known in Uncirculated to me: this and a PCGS MS62 which I sold to a Georgia collector a few years ago.

This coin is very high-end with an original appearance and nice color. If not for some marks in the right obverse field it would certainly grade MS62 iand possibly even higher. The D/D overmintmark is clearly visible to the naked eye and this represents a very early die state.

This is the only 1848-D/D half eagle from either SSCA #1 or SSCA #2.

Here is a coin which should interest both Dahlonega specialists and shipwreck gold collectors.

For the variety, CAC has approved this one in MS61 with none finer. The next highest grade for coins with approval is a single piece in AU53.
