RARE PCGS MS61 1848-D HALF EAGLE

The 1848-D is a rare issue in Uncirculated grades with fewer than 10 pieces known; mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range.

While this piece is very sharply defined, the surfaces have a flat appearance and it is likely that this coin was either buried at one time or it was in saltwater. There is peripheral planchet roughness from 6:00 to 12:00 on the obverse and there are a number of mint-made clashmarks at the central obverse.

Since early 2006, there are just two examples of this date that have sold at auction and this is one of these; see below for more information.

Ex Goldberg 9/2019: 1219 where it brought $9,600.
