Housed in an old green label holder and still properly graded, in my opinion, by today’s standards.
The 1842-D Small Date is among the easier early date half eagles from this mint to acquire, although it is noticeably scarcer than the 1843-D, 1844-D or 1845-D. It is difficult to find in grades higher than AU55 and it is very rare in Uncirculated.
This very well-defined example has plenty of natural luster on both sides. The color is a medium orange-gold hue and there are scattered marks consistent with the grade and with the issue on both sides.
Since October 2015, there are five APRs for this date in PCGS AU55 and they have been remarkably consistent, falling in the tight range of $3,960 to $4,088.
It is not easy to locate this date any choicer than the example offered here as part of the Indian Rocks Beach Collection.
