NICE CAC APPROVED PCGS/CAC AU50 1840-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 3-C. Tall D (designated by PCGS).

Varieties for this year are known with a Tall D and a Small D. The latter is far scarcer. As a date, the 1840-D is numismatically significant as the first half eagle from Dahlonega with the modified Liberty Head design as well as the mintmark now placed on the reverse. It is very scarce in the higher AU range, especially with nice color and choice surfaces.

This is an especially pleasing example for an issue which rarely comes nice. Both sides show natural deep green-gold color and the surfaces are very clean with only a few small ticks seen in the fields. The details are sharp and the overall appearance of this piece is certainly pleasing enough for even the most finicky collector.

Since the end of 2000, there are just three APRs for this date/variety in PCGS AU55 with none approved by CAC.

Most advanced collectors are aware of the rarity of this early issue in any Uncirculated grade which means that this charming CAC-approved AU55 represents just about the best available quality for the issue.

CAC has approved just two examples of this variety in AU55 with one finer (AU58). They have also approved three examples of the Small D in grades higher than AU55.
