EXCEPTIONAL PCGS/CAC AU55 1839-D HALF EAGLE
Variety 1-A; the scarcer of the two varieties for this issue.
The 1839-D is an extremely important issue from a numismatic perspective as it is a standalone coin. It is the first year of issue for the new Liberty Head design and it is the only Liberty Head with the mintmark placed on the obverse. Because of this, it is very popular and choice About Uncirculated pieces are rare and in great demand.
This exceptional example is a highlight of the Indian Rocks Beach Collection and it shows the “old school” 100% natural medium russet and green-gold hue which I find to be so desirable yet so elusive in today’s dip-n-strip market. Both sides show just the slightest amount of wear and the surfaces are very choice with a few old handling marks nicely concealed by the attractive color. This coin has the best eye appeal I have seen on a circulated 1839-D half eagle in some time.
No CAC approved PCGS AU55 example has ever sold at auction. Only three PCGS AU55s have sold at auction since April 2011 with the most recent occurrence in October 2018 for $14,400. Another piece brought $16,450 in October 2016, and in April 2016 a third realized $14,100. The piece offered here is clearly superior and the only piece offered for sale in recent years which was better (graded AU58 by PCGS) sold for $30,550 as Stack’s Bowers 6/2017: 11395.
This is an issue which has significant multiple levels of demand from both type collectors and Dahlonega specialists and I can’t imagine a nicer AU55 existing than this.
CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer.
