RARE CAC APPROVED 1857-D QUARTER EAGLE GRADED AU58 BY NGC

Variety 21-N.

While a fairly large number of 1857-D quarter eagles have been graded AU55 to MS62 by the two services, virtually all of these have been “improved” and choice, original AU58 and finer pieces are actually quite rare.

This piece, which is housed in an older NGC holder, is one of the very few 1857-D quarter eagles I have seen in this grade which is choice and original. The overall appearance is unlike virtually all higher grade 1857-Ds as it has better luster and nice original light rose-gold color. The strike is sharp, the surfaces are immaculate, and this coin really wouldn’t look out of place in an MS61 holder.

This exact coin represents the sole auction appearance of this date in CAC approved AU58; see below for more information.

Published price guides are too low for this date in properly graded AU58 and I doubt a finer 1857-D quarter eagle will be made available to the quality-conscious specialist for years to come.

Ex Heritage 2020 FUN: 5190 where it sold for $12,600.

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
