SCARCE 1853-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 17-N.

There were just 3,178 quarter eagles struck at the Dahlonega mint in 1853, and this issue is very scarce in all grades with slightly more than 100 known in total. It is not often seen in grades higher than AU55, and the 1853-D is very rare in Uncirculated.

This coin has a very choice obverse with excellent luster and the appearance of an AU58. The reverse shows deep, non-original toning which is likely covering some hairlines. I would strongly suggest that the new owner of this otherwise-impressive coin conserve the reverse.

There is but one APR for a PCGS AU55 example of this date since early 2006, and it brought $7,200 in Stack’s Bowers 6/2020 sale.

A decent coin despite the reverse and one worthy of consideration by a collector not afraid to take on a project.
