RARE 1846-D/D QUARTER EAGLE, PCGS AU55+

Variety 7-L. D/D (designated by PCGS).

There are only a handful of significant varieties in the Dahlonega quarter eagle series and the 1846-D/D is the most prominent and the most widely-collected. It is, in fact, considered a member of the regular set and, as such, it ranks as one of the scarcer quarter eagles from this mint in terms of total number known. It is extremely scarce in the higher AU grades and there are just one or two with claims to Mint State.

This is an early die state with the first mintmark punch clearly visible with light magnification. The coin itself is a nice yellow-gold in hue with considerable mint frost seen on both sides. I would expect that it would have graded AU58 were it not for a mint-made rim irregularity on the obverse at 11:00. The strike is sharp and the reverse is quite choice.

No PCGS AU55 example of this variety has sold at auction since the end of 2007. A PCGS AU58 sold for a strong $7,638 in the Stack’s Bowers 2015 ANA auction.

A decidedly above-average example of this scarce and very interesting variety.
