Coin Description

SCARCE 1880-0 EAGLE

The 1880-O is the third scarcest With Motto New Orleans eagle after the 1883-O and the 1879-O. Only 9,200 were made and of the few hundred which exist, most grade between EF40 and AU53. This date is characterized by excessive surface abrasions and many formerly-crusty examples have been lightened.

This piece is fresh to the market and is sourced from Europe where it was likely shipped to pay a foreign trade debt over a century ago. It shows deep russet color without the two-tone appearance common to coins from this source. The underlying surfaces are lustrous and lightly abraded. This is a very pleasing coin for the grade with real eye appeal.

The last NGC AU50 1880-O eagle to sell at auction brought $3,880 as Heritage 4/15: 6296 and it was virtually identical to the present coin.
