RARE NORMAL DATE 1865-S $10 GRADED VF25 BY PCGS

There are two varieites of 1865-S eagle: the rare Normal Date, and the better-known but more available Inverted Date. Prior to the discovery of around eight to 10 coins in the late 2010s, there were just 30 -35 extant. With fewer than 50 known in 2026, this issue remains among the single rarest San Francisco eagles of any type.

PCGS was seemingly conservative on this coin’s grade as there is enough luster seen in the recesses that an EF40 grade seems more appropriate than the current the current VF25. However, the diagnostically weak reverse center gives the unfair impression of extreme wear where there is more limited circulation. The color is pleasing with green-gold hues on both sides.

This exact coin (see below) is the sole PCGS VF25 1865-S Normal Date $10 to sell since 8/2021. Stack’s Bowers sold a nice PCGS/CAC VF30 for $17,400 in 8/2023.
