RARE LOW MINTAGE 1877 EAGLE

The 1877 is one of a small group of Philadelphia eagles from the 1870's which have mintage figure of fewer than 1,000 business strikes. Only 797 were made of which around five dozen or so are known today, mostly in the EF45-AU55 range.

This fresh-to-the-market example was recently uncovered in Europe and it is one of the few 1877 eagles which I have seen which wasn't bright from a recent dipping and riddled with deep abrasions. The surfaces are more frosty than reflective and this is a net positive for the coin as the marks that are present do not get magnified by reflectivness. Both sides show nice natural russet color and the eye appeal exceeds any 1877 eagle I can recall having seen.

Two PCGS AU55 examples have sold at auction since March 2011 and the last brought $12,338 as Goldberg 6/14: 1903.

The 1873 and the 1877--two other collectible dates with mintages of under 1,000--sell for more than double the price of the 1877 in the higher AU grades.
