VERY RARE PCGS/CAC AU58 1857-O EAGLE
The 1857-O is the third rarest No Motto eagle from New Orleans, trailing only the better-known 1859-O and 1841-O. Fewer than 100 are known from the original mintage of 5,500 and this date remains unknown in Uncirculated.
There are an estimated four or five AU58 examples of this date and I have handled them all. The present exampleis very choice with limited wear, natural green-gold color and uncommonly choice surfaces. There are not many 1857-O eagles which haven't been scrubbed and/or mishandled and this piece has considerable overall eye appeal.
The last PCGS AU58 with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $22,325 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 5667. The auction record for a PCGS AU58 1857-O eagle is $40,250, set by Heritage 10/06: 2934.
This is an extremely important coin for the advanced New Orleans eagle collector.
CAC has approved 3 in this grade with none finer.
