WONDERFUL PCGS AU50 1796 DOLLARS

Large Date, Small Letters.

B-5, BB-65. R-2. Late die sate with an interesting mounded retained cud covering much of the top of the I and the C in AMERICA.

Viewed as a date, the 1796 is a far scarcer issue than the 1795 Draped Bust. This is especially so once you reach the EF level. Appropriately graded AU 1796 dollars are scarce, and in Uncirculated, this is a rarity.

This coin was encased in an old NGC AU53 holder and I removed it in order to get it graded at PCGS. I personally think AU53 is the right grade for this 100% original piece. The obverse has a great naked-eye appearance with medium grey at the center which changes to a glowing golden hue at the border. The reverse is frosty and it shows natural silvery-grey with a dark patch of color from 5:00 to 9:00. There are two light old scratches in the right obverse that meet at their bases and form an unintentional “V.”

No PCGS AU50 example of this variety has sold at auction since 2014. In November 2025, Stack’s Bowers sold an original but dark PCGS 45 for $10,800, while the same firm sold another dark piece in 2023 for $13,200. A very low-end, liney example in a PCGS AU53 holder sold for $15,000 as Stack’s Bowers 4/2025: 3072.

A wonderful 1796 dollar!
