The 1838-D is a popular issue for a host of reasons including the following:
It’s the very first issue made at the newly-opened Dahlonega mint
It’s the first half eagle from this mint
It’s a one-year type and its one of just two mintmarked Classic Head half eagles
This is a commercial-quality example which means that it has been lightened at one time. However, it is a real AU50 based on the remaining luster. And if it didn’t have decent overall eye appeal, I wouldn’t have written a check for the coin!
