1870 $10 STRUCK IN ALUMINUM JUDD-1036; ONE OF JUST TWO KNOWN
J-1036. Regular dies but struck in Aluminum. High R-7/R-8; Only two known.
As with many of the Aluminum strikings of gold regular issue designs from this era, J-1036 was struck by the US Mint as bait for collectors. As Aluminum was a very expensive metal in the 1870s, this piece was no doubt regarded as an item of major importance by contemporary collectors.
This Gem example shows mellow color over reflective, defect-free surfaces. Unlike most Aluminum patterns of this era, there is no major spotting seen on either the obverse or the reverse.
A regular issue 1870 Proof $10 in gold is exceedingly rare and I have never handled one.
A great adjunct coin for the advanced Liberty Head eagle.
CAC has approved one in this grade and one finer (65+).
