HIGH GRADE 1892-O HALF EAGLE, PCGS MS62
After years of neglect, the 1892-O half eagle has finally earned some of the respect it serves as one of the scarcer dates from this mint in terms of its overall rarity.
This orange-gold example has good luster but the fields are somewhat abraded; this is the case on over 90% of the known 1892-O half eagles. This issue didn’t see much—if any—circulation, with nearly every known survivor in the AU55 to MS61 range. The abrasions become a problem for the collector seeking nice, clean 1892-O half eagle as this date was shipped loose in bags to banks and as a result, the surfaces on most coins are very busy.
Until two PCGS/CAC 1892-O half eagles were sold in 2013-14 (one for $21,600; the other for $20,400), no PCGS MS62 example of this date had sold at auction since 2004.
If you collect New Orleans half eagles, I don’t have to tell you what a scarce issue the 1892-O is in MS62 and finer.
