ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1899-S HALF EAGLES; GRADED MS66 BY PCGS
The 1899-S half eagle is common in grades through MS65 but it is rare in MS66 and unique in any grade higher.
This coin has been off the market for over two decades. I bought it in an older NGC holder and crossed it to PCGS. I expected it to sticker at CAC but it didn’t for an inexplicable reason. It shows superb rich amber-gold color on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and show an almost complete lack of marks.
Heritage 1/2025: 4810 (graded MS66 by PCGS/CAC) sold for a reasonable $15,600. It had earlier sold for $24,000 in the Heritage 4/2023 auction).
This would make an excellent type coin for a seven mint set of Liberty Head half eagles.
