SCARCE CACG EF45 1872-CC HALF EAGLE
Amongst the various CC half eagles made from 1870 through 1878, the 1872-CC can be best compared to the 1876-CC and the 1877-CC. It is scarce in choice EF, rare in the lower AU range, and extremely rare in AU58 with only four currently graded. The 1872-CC remains unknown in any Uncirculated grade.
This handsome example appears to be completely natural with rich greenish and honey-gold colors nicely blended over choice, unabraded surfaces. There is more than enough luster present to give this coin serious consideration as a “50.”
Since 2012, just a single PCGS EF45 has sold and it brought $18,000 in late 2023. That coin was ex Fairmont and it was approved by CAC.
Unless you have deep pockets and are OK with spending $25k+++ for an 1872-CC $5 that is only going to be marginally better than this coin, I’d suggest you give this high-end EF45 careful consideration.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with just five finer.
