PCGS MS66 1875-CC DIME, MM ABOVE VARIETY
Mintmark Above Bow Variety.
Varieties of 1875-CC Dimes exist with the mintmark above and below the bow. The former is the more common of the two. In Gem, the 1875-CC MIntmark Above Bow Dime is rare, and PCGS has graded just three pieces finer than the example we are offering here.
This piece is very well-struck for the issue with no weakness on Liberty’s head or on the wreath. The surfaces show very few marks and are covered with dusky champagne-gold color with a bit of deeper color at the very top of the obverse.
Only three PCGS MS66 examples of this variety have sold at auction since 2002; this includes this exact coin (see below). The last PCGS MS67 to sell brought $12,075 back in January 2011, and Stack’s Bowers sold an incredible PCGS/CAC MS67+ for $26,400 in November 2020.
It is unlikely that a finer example of this important issue will come available for some time.
Ex Old West Collection and formerly Lot 1367 in the Stack’s Bowers 11/2012 sale where it realized $3,819.
