ONE OF TWO GEM PCGS/CAC 1875-CC MM BELOW DIMES IN THIS COLLECTION

Mintmark Below Wreath variety.

Of the two varieites of 1875-CC Dimes, the Mintmark Below is easily the scarcer. For some inexplicable reason, it doesn’t command a sizable premium over its more available Mintmark Above variety. The Below Wreath coins are rare in properly graded MS65, and all but unavailable finer than this.

This mostly untoned example shows a bit of reddish-gold color at the date and some pale champagne hues on the reverse. The obverse die is somewhat rusted and this has caused a bit of weakness at the center while the reverse is better detailed.

Just three pieces graded MS65 by PCGS and approved by CAC (including this exact coin; see below) have sold at auction since 2009, with the most recent sale occurring back in September, 2013.

It is obviously an unusual occurrence to have two Gem PCGS/CAC examples of this popular issue available to Carson City Dime specialists.

CAC has approved seven in this grade with none finer.

From The Old West Collection and earlier ex Stack’s Bowers 7/2013: 1756 where it sold for $3,819.
