A Superb PCGS MS66+ with CAC Approval
The popular Indian Head quarter eagle—one of only two incuse designs employed on a US coin—was made with interruptions from 1908 through 1929. It is the only easily completed gold series, as all issues are available in grades through MS65. This is definitely not the case in MS66 and finer as evidenced by the fact that, for the entire series, PCGS has graded just 30 total coins in MS66+, and only eight in MS67. Most of these are dated 1908 and 1925-D, with the former issue possessing a current population of 14 coins in PCGS and six finer.
PCGS has never graded an example of this type in MS67+ or finer, and it is highly unlikely that they ever will, given their very strict standards when it comes to this series.
As one would expect, this is an outstanding coin with dynamic reddish-orange color over choice, frosty luster. The surfaces are free of all but the tiniest marks and the Indian’s cheek lacks any of the typical rub.
The only comparable example of this date that I can recall having seen was the lovely Don Kutz coin that brought $33,500 in the Heritage 2025 FUN auction.
I almost never buy Indian Head quarter eagles for inventory, but this coin makes a lot of sense to me for the type collector seeking a single example of this popular design for an advanced quality-conscious set. You’ll likely never be able to obtain a CAC approved MS67 (pretty obvious as none exist!) and, in my opinion, I would rather own this solid CAC approved 66+ than a non-CAC MS67 which will cost you $75,000, and which I’ve not seen an example of for a decade++ .
