POPULAR ONE-YEAR TYPE 1839-C $5, PCGS/CAC AU50
The 1839-C is a popular one year type. It is the sole half eagle from Charlotte with the curved neck Liberty head design. It is also one of only two half eagles from this mint with the mintmark positioned on the obverse. This is not a rare issue in terms of the total known, but it is in strong demand and the supply has run short.
In my opinion, this lustrous medium yellow-gold example is an AU53/55 coin that has been properly net-graded by PCGS due to a number of scattered, shallow contact marks mostly in the lower left obverse field. Another mark can be seen beneath star 11 on the obverse
Just two PCGS AU50 1839-C half eagle APRs appear since mid-2018. One was for $19,800 in October 2022, while the other was for $19,200 in April of the same year. In the 2024 ANA auction, Stack’s Bowers sold a scrubby PCGS AU53 for $15,600
This popular one-year issue continues to be readily sought by type and date collectors alike.
