SCREAMING GEM 1911 HALF EAGLE GRADED PCGS/CAC MS65+

While available from time-to-time in full MS65, any example of the 1911 half eagle finer than this is exceedingly rare. PCGS has only graded two in MS66 with zero finer, and I have never personally seen a coin graded MS66 that I would sell to a good client.

This coin has the best reverse I can recall seeing on this date with glowing green-gold and orange-gold swirls. The obverse shows blazing luster beneath slightly less intense color but does have a few tiny marks near the mouth and chin. Still, this is a wonderful coin and it is from a collection which, in my opinion, was every bit the equal of the better-known Simpson set of Indian half eagles.

There are three APRs for the 1911 half eagle in PCGS/CAC MS65+ representing two different coins (see below). The high water mark for this date in MS65+ is $17,625, while Heritage 2021 ANA: 4163 (graded PCGS/CAC MS65) set the all-time record price at $24,000.

You’ll likely never have the chance to buy a finer 1911 $5 than this Gem!

CAC has approved 30 total in MS65 (including at least three in MS65+) with none finer.
