FRESH, FROSTY CAC APPROVED 1866 WITH MOTTO DOUBLE EAGLE

With Motto variety; designated by PCGS.

The 1866 is numismatically significant due to its status as the very first Type Two double eagle from Philadelphia. It is easily located in circulated grades but it is scarce in the lower Uncirculated range and nearly impossible to find above MS62.

This is an uncommonly choice coin for the grade with surfaces which suggest an MS61 or even higher. It is 100% original with very attractive rich natural orange-gold color with darker highlights and suggestions of rose and green-gold in the fields. Both sides are fully lustrous and there are no deep or detracting marks as one would expect on an MS60 double eagle.

Only four PCGS MS60 1866 double eagles have sold at auction since late 2009 and the only one which was CAC approved realized $8,913 in the 2012 ANA sale. In June 2014, a non-CAC example brought $10,575 in a Stacks Bowers sale.

This choice example would qualify for nearly any high-end set of Type Two double eagles.

CAC has approved 5 in this grade with 11 finer.
