CHOICE CAC APPROVED 1844-O HALF EAGLE GRADED AU58+ BY PCGS

By a large  margin, the 1844-O is the most available No Motto half eagle from New Orleans, both in terms of overall and high grade rarity. It is fairly easy to locate in AU58 but most seen are low-end and the 1844-O is a scarce issue in properly graded Uncirculated.

This not your run-of-the-mill AU58 coin. In fact, I like it more than 1844-O half eagles which I have seen in MS61 or even MS62 holders. It is 100% original with lovely natural medium orange-gold color on both sides and very clean surfaces. A number of the stars and slender due to die lapping and there are bold reverse die cracks through the U in UNITED to the right wing and through the ES in STATES to the beak.

Surprisingly, no CAC approved PCGS AU58 1844-O half eagle has sold at auction in the last few years. An NGC AU58 with CAC approval realized $2,233 as Heritage 2014 FUN: 6647.

It would be difficult to imagine a nicer circulated example of this date.

CAC has approved 13 in AU58 (including at least two in AU58+) with 15 finer.
