The Moffat coinage is popular with collectors due to its years of issue and it close resemblance to the regular issue Liberty Head half eagle. These issues saw active use in Gold Rush California and, as a result, are typically seen with extensive wear and heavily abraded surfaces.
This lightly circulated example is well-made and lustrous with moderate green-gold splashes over surfaces with fewer marks than normal.
Only one PCGS AU55 has sold at auction since July 2008 and it brought $8,813 as Heritage 12/13: 3940.
A decidedly above-average example of this important issue.
