NGC AU55 1846-O HALF EAGLE
The 1846-O is comparable in overall rarity to the 1851-O half eagle. It is not often seen in AU55 and it becomes very rare in Uncirculated with fewer than 10 pieces accounted for.
As with most of the Essex Collection branch mint half eagles, this piece is characterized by nice natural color and choice surfaces. The color is a medium to deep russet and this is date which, in my experience, is especially hard to locate with rich hues. There is a light scrape below stars four and five on the obverse which is hard to see unless the coin is tilted.
Only three AU55 1846-O half eagles have sold at auction since July 2005 and the most recent APR is $4,230 for a PCGS coin offered as Heritage 10/15: 3521.
Unless you have deep pockets and lots of patience, you aren't likely to locate a finer 1846-O half eagle than this.
