CAC APPROVED 1843-O LARGE LETTERS $5.00 IN PCGS AU58

Varieties of 1843-O half eagle are seen with Small Letters and Large Letters. The latter is more available but it is a scarce issue in higher grades. Interestingly, Uncirculated 1843-O Large Letters half eagles are seen more often than AU58’s and lightly circulated pieces tend to be severely lacking in eye appeal.

This is a connoisseur-quality example which has totally natural green-gold color on both sides. A bit of weakness can be seen on IC in AMERICA and this is the result of die lapping. A few marks are clustered in the right obverse field but overall this coin is just exceptional with the look which DWN loves and is famous for selling.

Just one PCGS AU58 1843-O Large Letters has sold at auction since July 2005 and it was a non-CAC coin which realized $5,875 as Stacks Bowers 3/15: 7377.

When available, Uncirculated examples of this issue run in the $20,000-30,000 range which puts them out of reach of many collectors.

CAC has approved four in this grade with five finer.
