NICE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU58 1845-D HALF EAGLE

The 1845-D is among the more available half eagles from Dahlonega in terms of total numbers known. There are many pieces graded AU58 by both services but most are low-end and this is verified by the remarkably low CAC population; just three in AU58 and one finer.

This is an "old school" AU58 and it reminds me of the sort of Dahlonega half eagle that I used to find for sale back in the 1980's. It is undipped with nice natural green-gold color and ample dirt in the recesses. There is no real wear but there are enough small ticks to narrowly remove it from Mint State status. That said, this coin has a nicer appearance than all but a handful of the MS61  1845-D half eagles I have seen.

No CAC approved 1845-D half eagles have sold at auction and the last two APR's for PCGS graded examples are $4,230 in January 2017 for a real clunker and $4,935 in April 2015 for a nicer coin.

If there was ever a "perfect type coin" for the collector seeking one really nice Dahlonega half eagle, this is it.

CAC has approved three in this grade with just one finer.
