VERY CHOICE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU58 1881-O EAGLE

This popular issue has a mintage of just 8,350 coins and it is not often seen in the higher AU grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces. In Uncirculated, the 1881-O eagle is very rare and most are "chewy" MS60 to MS61 coins with negative eye appeal.

This is among the nicest AU58 examples of this date I have seen. It has no real wear but there is enough bag friction for it to be knocked out of the MS61 category. It is satiny with pleasing original golden-orange color and while there are appreciable scuffs in the fields, the surfaces are better than average for this date.

No CAC approved AU58 1881-O eagle has sold at auction and only two PCGS AU58"s have been offered since March 2010. In their 2011 FUN sale, Heritage sold a PCGS AU58 for $6,325 and a nice PCGS AU58+ realized $7,763 in the Bowers and Merena 10/2010 sale.

I have seen inferior MS60 and MS61 1881-O eagles sell for over $10,000 and this CAC super-slider is an excellent value for the savvy specialist.

CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer.
