CAC APPROVED 1853/'2' EAGLE GRADED AU58 BY PCGS

FS-301.

While this variety's status as an overdate has been downplayed by PCGS in recent years, there is no denying this variety is rare in properly graded AU58 and extremely rare in full Mint State. The finest I am aware of are a pair of PCGS MS61's.

This is an early die state with plenty of activity in the lower loop of the 3 in the date. The coin itself is very choice with an absolute minimum of friction on the high spots and the appearance of an MS61. Both sides are frosty with nice natural pale russet color and far fewer marks than normal for the date and grade.

The only comparable 1853/'2' eagle to appear at auction in recent years is a CAC approved PCGS AU58+ which realized $9,400 in the Legend 9/15 sale.

This is not a date which I would advise stretching for an Uncirculated example and this solid AU58 should suffice for nearly any first-rate Liberty Head eagle set.

CAC has approved four in this grade (including one in 58+) with none finer.
