Variety 2. Large Date.
The Large Date variety is always popular due to the cartoonish large size of the date (it is from a silver dollar punch) and it is difficult to find nice AU55 and AU58 examples with original surfaces and natural color.
This is a very high-end coin for the grade totally natural russet and orange-gold hues on both sides. There is minimal wear confined to the high spots and the surfaces are clean for the grade. With just a touch more pizzazz this piece would likely have graded AU58.
Only five 1854-O Large Date eagles have sold at auction since the beginning of 2009 and the most relevant APR is Heritage 12/15: 4640 at $3,055 for a non-CAC piece. No CAC approved PCGS AU55s have sold at auction.
Here is another coin which represents good value and which is not easily located in grades finer than this.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with 10 finer.
