SCARCE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU55 1881-CC HALF EAGLE

By a large margin, the 1881-CC is the scarcest post-1878 half eagle from Carson City. It is not often seen finer than AU53 to AU55 and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just three or four known.

This lightly worn example retains a considerable amount of luster and it shows nice russet color which is deepest and most extensive at the reverse periphery. Some shallow abrasions can be seen in the left obverse field and on the portrait but these fail to detract from the above-average eye appeal.

Just three PCGS AU55 1881-CC half eagles have sold at auction since Jone 2005 and none were CAC approved. The most recent APR is Heritage 12/17: 3254 at $9,625.

This is an important piece for the Carson City half eagle specialist.

CAC has approved five in this grade with six finer.

Ex Heritage 1/14: 6751 (without CAC approval) where it realized $8,225.
