VERY SCARCE NGC MS61 1859-S GOLD DOLLAR
The low mintage 1859-S is comparable in overall rarity to the 1857-S and 1858-S gold dollars but it is slightly harder to locate in true Uncirculated. In fact, the 1859-S is almost never seen above MS62 and the best I have ever offered for sale graded MS63.
This deep golden example is extremely well struck for the issue and it is absolutely "new" without any of the rub or friction seen on most in this grade. A few light scrapes on the cheek force a downgrade from what would otherwise be a considerably higher grade--and price tag.
There are nine APR's for this date in MS61 since 2006, all NGC and all lacking CAC approval. These range from a low of $3,408 (9/17 for a very low end coin) to a high of $5,750 (9/08).
A decidedly above-average example of a conditionally scarce issue.
