RARE NGC/CAC 1843-D LARGE D $2.50 GRADED AU55

Variety 4-I, Large Mintmark. Not designated by NGC.

This naked-eye variety is recognized by both services and it is rare in all grades and very rare in any grade approaching Uncirculated. I am aware of just two in Uncirculated (neither are choice) and an AU55 is very nearly within the Condition Census for the variety.

This piece shows a typical strike for the variety with central weakness mostly on the obverse. There is a good deal of luster on both sides and the color is a nice medium orange-gold with the obverse a bit duskier than the reverse.

Only two AU55 examples of this variety have sold at auction and the present piece (see below for the pedigree) is the only one with CAC approval.

A neat find for the advanced Dahlonega quarter eagle specialist.

CAC has approved this one example in AU55 with none finer.

Ex Heritage 6/13: 5570 at $3,525.
