ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN PROOF 1877 GOLD DOLLARS

Only 20 Proofs were struck, tying the 1877 with the lowest mintage of any Type III gold dollar along with the 1874, 1875 and the 1878. There are likely a dozen or so known with a few Gems accounted for but nothing finer than PR66DCAM.

This is the single best Proof 1877 gold dollar I can recall seeing and it has dramatic black and white contrast with heavily frosted devices which lack any breaks in the frost. The obverse is nearly perfect with no hairlines and just a few small mint-made marks; the reverse shows a few minor lines below 5x magnification.

No PCGS PR66 1877 gold dollar has ever sold at auction and the last three APR's for NGC PR66's (representing two different coins) are $27,025 (6/17), $25,800 (1/13) and $29,900 (8/11). Not counting an impaired piece which sold in 2015, no PCGS graded 1877 Proof dollar has sold at auction since October 2006.

A strong case can be made for calling this date one of the true rarities in the gold dollar Proof series and an equally strong case can be made for calling this lovely Gem one of the top two or three known.
