RARE NGC MS61 1880-CC HALF EAGLE

This is one of just two pre-1890 Carson City half eagles which are sometimes seen in Uncirculated. But unlike the 1882-CC, the 1880-CC is essentially unavailable above MS61 and it is doubtful if as many as 10 exist in all Uncirculated grades.

This example is unquestionably "new" with no wear seen on the high spots and unbroken luster in the fields. The strike is sharp and even and the color is a pleasing natural yellow-gold which changes to apple-green at the borders. On the obverse there are some grade-limiting marks in the upper left field and on Liberty's cheek while a few mint-made black spots are seen on the lower reverse.

Only four MS61 1880-CC half eagles have sold at auction since 2003 and this includes some duplication. The most recent APR is $14,100 attained by Heritage 9/16: 14106.

This issue is basically unattainable finer than this and just one finer (a PCGS MS62 which sold for $22,325 in March 2017) has been offered in close to six years.

Ex Heritage 2014 FUN sale, Lot 6747, where it brought $11,750.
