RARE AND ATTRACTIVE BORDERLINE GEM 1841 HALF EAGLE

In terms of overall rarity, the 1841 is among the scarcer pre-Civil War half eagles from the Philadelphia mint. There are around a dozen or so known in Uncirculated with enough in the MS63 to MS64 range to suggest that a small hoard existed at one time. The best I have seen was a very high end NGC MS64 which brought $24,675 as Heritage 4/15: 5330.

This very attractive borderline Gem is naturally vibrant with extremely flashy luster which is accentuated by mint-made die polishing lines. The obverse is very nearly of Gem quality with just a single shallow depression (mint-made) in the right obverse field; the reverse shows a small cluster of marks behind the head of the eagle. This coin must be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

A far inferior NGC MS64 1841 half eagle sold twice at auction; once for $10,575 in January 2013 and earlier for $13,800 in January 2007.

A really, really cool coin which would make an ideal No Motto Liberty Head half eagle type piece for an advanced set.
