This scarce Civil War issue has a mintage of 5,959 business strikes and it is not often seen in grades higher than MS62 to MS63.
This satiny piece shows fewer striations than normal for the issue and the obverse shows light orange-gold color; the reverse has a splash of deeper toning at the top left.
No PCGS MS61 1861 three dollar has sold at auction since 2005. Three NGC MS61's have sold since the beginning of 2009 and the last record was $7,344 for Heritage 9/16: 14013 which had a toning spot at the central obverse which even scared me (!).
