RARE PCGS AU58 1853-D QUARTER EAGLE

The mintage of this date is a tiny 3,178 but the 1853-D is overshadowed by the very rare 1854-D through 1856-D trio of dates. Most 1853-D quarter eagles are seen in grades below AU53 and properly graded AU58's are legitimately rare in spite of the swollen PCGS/NGC population figures.

This exceptional coin is nearly fully prooflike which is very uncommon for any quarter eagle from this mint, especially an 1853-D. It shows a typical weak strike at the upper obverse and the corresponding reverse but the details are mostly defined and the surfaces are very choice. Both sides show nice orange-gold color and the eye appeal is very far above average for the date.

No AU58 example of this date has sold at auction since June 2013 and the last PCGS AU58 crossed the block all the way back in May 2003. In April 2017 a low-end PCGS MS61 realized $16,461.

This is one of the better 1853-D quarter eagles I have offered in a number of years (I have offered just one Uncirculated piece since 2015) and it would be difficult to improve this piece.
