EXTREMELY RARE PCGS AU58 1879-CC EAGLE

Ex Battle Born Collection and pedigreed as such by PCGS.

The 1879-CC is, in my opinion, a worthy rival to the 1870-CC as the rarest Carson City eagle and it is a major rarity in higher grades with not more than three or four real AU55 to AU58 examples plus a single Uncirculated example graded MS62 by NGC.

This is from the famous Battle Born Collection, unquestionably the best collection of CC coinage ever assembled. I believe this coin is totally free of wear but it is "scuffy" from rough handling and this has slightly impacted the luster. The color is a totally natural rose and light orange-gold with the obverse slightly deeper in hue than the reverse. If you understand this issue (which few people do) you'll know that it is exceptional and it is far better than any other 1879-CC eagle that's been on the market for well over a decade.

The last AU58 to sell at auction was an inferior NGC coin which realized a strong $56,400 as Heritage 2017 FUN: 5951. Prior to the Battle Born coin selling, the last AU58 traded in May 2008.

I sent this coin to CAC and it didn't pass and I didn't really expect it to but I think this coin should sticker. Its not technically "CAC quality" (it is to abraded) but when you look at all other 1879-CC eagles, this is clearly among the three or so finest known. End of rant.

This is an extremely important coin which deserves to be included in a world-class set of Carson City eagles.
