RARE COLLECTOR GRADE 1873-CC EAGLE

The 1873-CC is similar in overall rarity to the 1877-CC and the 1878-CC and this low mintage issue (only 4,600 were made) is among the more difficult eagles from Carson City to locate.

If there were such grade as VF38 this coin would qualify. It is just a tiny bit too worn to grade EF40 but it is clearly far nicer than most early CC eagles in VF35 holders. Both sides show nice natural russet color which deepens at the borders and there are hints of luster on either side as well. There are relatively few marks on the surfaces although a tiny (and I do mean tiny) nick on the obverse rim can be seen. For the date and grade, the eye appeal is far above average.

Only one VF35 has sold at auction since 2003 and it brought a strong $19,975 as Heritage 9/16: 5708 (it was slabbed by NGC and wasn't an upgrade in my opinion). Two NGC VF30 coins sold in 2014 with the lesser bringing $14,100; the better brought $21,150 (I also don't see this coin as being better than the assigned grade).

This is likely the best available quality for this date and less than $20,000 and it represents an important opportunity for the advanced CC eagle collector to fill a gaping hole in his set.
