RARE COLLECTOR GRADE 1872-CC EAGLE

An estimated 75-85 are known from a mintage of just 4,600. The 1872-CC is among the scarcer CC eagles and it is a date which remains unknown in Uncirculated (as are the half eagles of this year).

This evenly worn example shows pleasing natural russet coloration with far fewer abrasions than normal for the issue. I think PCGS nailed the grade on this piece as it shows detail fully consistent with my interpretation of VF30.

No VF30 1872-CC eagle from either service has sold at auction since early 2001 and no VF35 has crossed the block since 1999. A VF25 in an older holder (I graded it VF30/35) realized $11,750 as Heritage 4/17: 16764.

Here is a date which is almost never available at this price point and which represents an important opportunity for the advanced collector.
