CAC APPROVED PCGS AU55 1858-D HALF EAGLE

The 1858-D appears for sale less often than the 1859-D and 1860-D half eagles. It is scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is very rare and curiously overlooked in Uncirculated.

This bright yellow-gold example exhibits very little wear and it has nearly full luster. The strike is sharp with all details up and bold save for the arrow feathers on the reverse. There are some scattered handling marks seen on both sides with the most notable located on the jaw of Liberty. The overall eye appeal is clearly better than average for both the date and the grade.

There are just two APRs for the 1858-D half eagle in PCGS/CAC AU55: this exact coin (see below) and another which brought $5,040 as Stack’s Bowers 2018 ANA: 4120.

This coin will fit well into nearly any high quality set of Dahlonega half eagles or it may work well for a type collector looking for a somewhat scarcer date to represent an example of this issue.

CAC has approved four in this grade with six finer.

Ex Heritage 2/2019: 3838 where it sold for $4,920.
