HIGH GRADE PCGS/CAC 1855-D MEDIUM MINTMARK HALF EAGLE

Variety 38-CC. Medium D. (Not designated by PCGS).

I regard the 1855-D as a much scarcer issue in the Dahlonega series although it is not as rare as I believed when I released the third edition of my book in 2013. It remains legitimately rare in properly graded AU58 and it is very rare in Uncirculated.

This example is housed in an older PCGS holder and it remains stable and properly graded. It shows a far better-than-average strike with very sharp centers while there is considerable luster remaining. The wear is slight and limited to some minor high point friction while the fields lack the pesky abrasions so commonly seen on this issue. The icing on the proverbial cake is this coin’s rich natural orange-gold splashes on either side. To be entirely accurate, we must mention a few minor grease stains, as made, on the lower obverse.

Just a single APR exists for the 1855-D Medium D half eagle in PCGS AU58 with CAC approval. This was for another coin which sold for a strong $10,350 as Stack’s Bowers 11/2011: 9518.

This piece is likely close to the Condition Census for the variety and it represents a way above-average example for this much scarcer date.

For this variety, CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
