This is a naked-eye variety which is considerably scarcer than the Large D and it commands a good premium among specialized Dahlonega half eagle collectors.
This is a very high end example for the grade with choice surfaces and pleasing natural green-gold and russet hues on either side. Some dirt caked into the recesses on the reverse attests to this coin’s undipped status.
A different PCGS/CAC AU50 example of this variety sold for $3,760 as Heritage 9/2016: 5674.
I have handled very few 1854-D Medium D half eagles and I believe this variety to be both very scarce and essential to completing an in-depth set of half eagles from this mint.
For this variety, CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
