DESIRABLE PCGS/CAC AU58 1849-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 25-S.

The 1849-D is a common date by the standards of Dahlonega half eagles although it is far more challenging to locate than the 1852-D through 1854-D issues. Properly graded AU58 coins are very scarce and Uncirculated 1849-D half eagles are quite rare. In fact, CAC has approved just one finer than this coin: an MS63.

This ranks as among the nicer AU58 examples of this specific date that I can recall having seen. It is well-struck and has impressively clean surfaces which show considerable mint luster. The color is a pleasing natural medium green-gold with some pale coppery shadings visible in the reverse fields. A small patch of dirt joins the eagle’s right wing to the denticles.

There is just a single APR for a CAC approved PCGS AU58 1849-D half eagle and it sold for $7,344 as Heritage 1/2017: 6777.

Very few finer pieces with CAC approval exist (just one, in fact) and that coin is multiples more money and is likely unavailable.

CAC has approved four in this grade with just one finer (MS63).
