UNDERRATED PCGS AU58 1847-D HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL.

I have long regarded the 1847-D as a true appearance rarity within the Dahlonega half eagle series. There aren’t more than a small handful of pieces known which meet my criteria as “choice and original”, and this is borne out by the very low CAC population for AU58 and finer 1847-D half eagles.

This piece has 100% natural color and it has never been brightened or enhanced as have most 1847-D half eagles. Both sides are sharply defined and the color is a rich green-gold with some orange overtones. There are but a few tiny marks on the surfaces and the eye appeal is far above average for the date and grade.

Just three PCGS AU58 examples of this date have sold at auction since 2001, and the last piece offered at a major sale was back in January 2007. As expected, no CAC example graded higher than AU50 has ever sold at auction, and that was back in 2011.

Unless you absolutely have to have an Uncirculated 1847-D half eagle for your set, this is the nicest piece you are likely to find.

CAC has approved three in this grade with just two finer (both MS62).
