LOVELY CAC APPROVED 1846-D/D HALF EAGLE, PCGS AU55
Variety 16-J. Low Date.
This variety was created when the initial mintmark punch was too low and was then corrected by placing it higher. The 1846-D/D is actually more available than the Normal Mintmark variety but it is extremely popular due to its easy visibility. In the higher AU grades, the 1846-D/D is scarce and examples with choice surfaces and good color are very seldom available.
This is a truly lovely piece and I would be surprised if there are more than a handful of comparable 1846-D/D half eagles known in the AU55 to AU58 range. The surfaces are very clean, the detail is absolutely hammered and the color is a very cosmetically appealing medium to deep orange-gold.
Just a single example of this variety has ever sold at auction in PCGS/CAC AU55 and it is this exact coin; see below for more detailed information.
If I were assembling a high quality set of half eagles from this mint, I’d want every coin in an AU55 holder to look like this!
CAC has approved three in this grade with just two finer.
Ex Stack’s Bowers 3/2020: 4190 where it sold for $4,800.
