RARE 1841-D TALL D HALF EAGLE GRADED AU58 BY PCGS

Variety 5-B. Tall D, reverse of 1840 (designated by PCGS).

Viewed as a date, the 1841-D is scarce in the higher circulated grades and rare in Uncirculated. There are two mintmark varieties and the Tall D, which is quite scarce, uses the reverse die from 1840.

This piece is bright and lustrous with just a small amount of wear which is limited to the high spots. The surfaces show a few scattered marks, most of which lie in the left obverse field. The strike is extremely sharp and this piece has a pleasing if somewhat commercial appearance which should satisfy many collectors.

No PCGS graded AU58 example of the 1841-D Tall D half eagle has ever sold at auction. There are three APRs for 1841-D Small D half eagles since 1999 with the most recent occurring in January 2018; that coin brought $5,040.

I am aware of just two or three 1841-D Tall D half eagles which grade higher than AU58 which makes this coin a likely candidate for the Condition Census for the variety.
